When I would go out and celebrate St. Paddy’s Day at the bar, it would always almost ruin my night to see people wearing green sequins, giant green hats, crazy clover glasses, and funny Irish drinking t-shirts. I like to have as much fun as anyone else, but seeing the way that (mostly) non-Irish people celebrate the day always struck a note of discord in me.

Most of my dissatisfaction with the way people dress and act on St. Patty’s Day stemmed from the fact that I am actually very Irish. I appreciate my Irish heritage deeply and when I see non-Irish acting out in such a crazed way as they do on a holiday reserved for honoring my traditions, I feel a bit disrespected. Not wearing funny Irish drinking t-shirts was my little way of protesting against that disrespect.

After several drinks last St. Patty’s Day at the homestead, my friend gave me a present. I opened it and, lo and behold, pulled two funny Irish drinking t-shirts out of the box. My friend said he noticed that I didn’t have any St. Patty’s Day shirts, so he got me one. As much as I hated it at that moment, I had to swallow my objections and wear it out of politeness.

Guess what? I had the absolute time of my life. I showed up wearing, what was honestly, a really funny Irish drinking t-shirt and someone bought me a shot of whiskey as soon as I walked in. They complimented my shirt, high-fived me, and we did a shot together. There is no one more popular at a bar than a red-headed Irishman wearing a funny irish shirt. I was brother to every person with even an iota of Irish blood.

Coming from the viewpoint of someone who has never approved of crazy costumes and acting silly just for the sake of showing everyone around you how enthusiastic you are, I have to admit that celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day with funny Irish drinking t-shirts makes everything so much better and SO much drunker!
